Yummy Cinnamon Sugar Pretzels

"It's Christmastime in the city" and I'm a big fan of it.

Even though window displays are lovely and super artistic, I enjoy the things that appear that aren't there the rest of the year. I mean, there's ALWAYS window displays in NYC. However, there isn't always giant candy cane wreaths hanging off buildings.
Or giant wreaths hanging inside buildings.
I do have to admit I had fun taking funky photos of the Bergdorf windows and the reflections that my camera picked up. For instance, this mannequin with a beautiful red gown looks like she's flying up through the buildings on Fifth Avenue.
Oh, and if anyone wants to get me a new gown to sing in, this one looks LOVELY.
Having the city decorated from top to bottom makes me feel like I'm walking in a winter wonderland, even if there isn't any snow yet.

As for food, here's another festive recipe. In fact, I'm taking it to a holiday party tonight. That is if I can stop myself from eating them all. They are REALLY good (and nicely refreshing after so many other heavy treats.)
Cinnamon Sugar Pretzels (found on Baking Junkie)
1 (16 oz) bag pretzel twists
⅔ cup vegetable oil
½ cup sugar
2 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Pour pretzels into a roasting pan. In a medium sized bowl mix together vegetable oil, cinnamon and sugar. Pour over pretzels and stir to coat. Place in oven and bake for 30 minutes, removing twice to stir.

Erika's Extra: I didn't come close to using the whole 16 oz of pretzels. Half a bag seemed perfect for me. Also, keep your eye on the pretzels. You don't want them burning so 25 minutes might be more appropriate for some ovens.
Bake well and prosper!

  1. Oh, these are fab. I never would have thought you could pimp out pretzels like this :D, great idea! I adore anything cinnamony. Its just so sweet and warming :). Speaking of sweet daaaaaahling, I want that gown too. Maybe we can both wear it (but I dont want to sing in mine LOL--I am good at a lot of things, but singing is most definitely not one of them ;)).

  2. wow NY is so beautiful during x'mas seasons!
looks like an addictive snack - when i have to take something truly delicious to a party, i usually end up standing next to it all night nibbling away. doesn't sound right tho to eat your own food lol.

  4. HH - Yes! Let's share the dress. I hope we are the same size! ;)

Vivienne - There is nothing wrong with standing next to your creation and eating it the whole night (seeing it's probably the best thing out there.)

Zoe - You've got to visit NY fo the holidays. It's cold, but beautiful.

  6. Tiffany & Selba - thanks! I loved these and could have eaten the whole batch, but gracefully restrained from doing so.

  7. Just made these! Not only are they yummy, but they smell so wonderful while baking. I'm thinking you could really add all kinds of spices with the oil.

  8. Julio's mom - Ooo! That got my mind a'thinking. Hmmm...brown sugar would be good too...maybe.

  9. did you use less oil when you only made 1/2 the bag of pretzels?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Anonymous - I actually made the whole amount of oil and sugar and cinnamon, but when I was pouring over the pretzels I did not use the whole amount.

  11. are these salted pretzels?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yep! Salted pretzels. Then you get a nice salty and sweet taste. :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. You mentioned you only used about 8oz of pretzels - did you end up halving the oil, sugar and cinnamon or no?

  14. Thanks for this amazing recipe! I added it to my blog, with a link to here. Hope you don't mind! And again thanks for the great recipe... I love the mix of salty and sweet flavors!

  16. Had these at a friend's house today as an afternoon snack with my 2 year old....soooo yummy!!!

  17. Baking now! Smell so NICE! :)

  18. Oh my! I replaced the vegetable oil with coconut oil. Put the full 16 oz of pretzels in a bowl, poured the "sauce" over it and tossed. These are SO delicious!

    ReplyDelete
  19. @MamaJen...Thanks, I was just wondering if I could sub coconut oil or butter for the oil. I'm not a big fan of veg. oil. These sound wonderful! Thanks Erica.

  21. gotta admit. i am a bit disappointed with these. not enough cinnamon flavor. i think next time i try them, i will sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar while they are still warm.

  22. Do these store well? I'd like to make them ahead for a party a few days from now.

  23. I've had them around my apartment for a couple of days at a time and they seem to hold up well. Definitely best day of though.
I would use this yummy nut mix for a party treat that tastes better after a couple of days: http://lifestooshorttoskipdessert.blogspot.com/2011/01/potpourri-buttered-rosemary-orange-nuts.html

  27. Wonder if you can do this using Xylitol (natural sweetner) instead of sugar as I'm prediabetic. Anybody know? Anybody tried this way?

    1. May try it with my kids anyway for a different snack to have on hand. Something to do over Thanksgiving break :)

  28. CC - I've never usued Xylitol. Let me know if you try it and it turns out well.

  30. Made these this morning only used butter instead of oil and while still warm used mccormick/cinnamon sugar grinder for alittle more sweetness...turned out great. Thanks soo much...

  31. Do you bake them covered or uncovered?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Uncovered. You do move them around half way through though to help heat evenly.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've been making these for a few years now. I add a 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. ground red pepper for a little zip. Yummy

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ooo! Ground pepper with this recipe sounds great! Maybe I'll make it this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mmmmmmm sounds soooo good, now trying to figure out what other flavors would work well too, maybe a pizza flavored pretzel? Gonna try these first, thanks for sharing :D

  36. How do these keep? I would like to use them for my student's treat bags this Christmas. I would be making today but not giving them out until another 4 days.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think the pretzels are best within 3 days of making them. I feel like they start getting stale/or mushy. But then again, they are such a hit that they never seem to be around for more than 2 days. :)

  38. I don't know what I did wrong! I followed the recipe and instructions and this is what happened; my mixture was very gooey (not sure if it was suppose to be) poured it over my pretzels checked on it 10 minutes later most of the gooey stuff sunk to the bottom of the pan...it was a big thick gooey burning mess! :( I just wasted a whole bag of pretzels! :(

    ReplyDelete
  39. These are so good! I made them for a church event and several people asked for the recipe. I'm also doing them and putting them in bags for Christmas gifts for my neighbors. Thanks!

  40. Can't wait to make these! Sounds delicious!

  41. These were the bomb!! Thanks for the recipe!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. The oil makes these taste funny maybe butter next time but my kids love them!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Perfect! My kids loved this sweet spin on one of their favorite salty treats :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. delicious! i know its not Christmas but these are tasty whatever the time of year, pics of mine here http://abimakes.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/cinnamon-sugar-pretzels.html

  45. Do I need to use a roasting pan specifically? OR can I use a baking sheet? Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anonymous - You could use a baking sheet. Just be careful that the oil doesn't run off the baking sheet. Oil on the bottom of your oven is messy (and not in a good way.)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Must have done something wrong because to sugar and cinnamon did not stick to the pretzels. :-(

    ReplyDelete
  48. I consider myself a little challenged in the 'home ec' department, but these actually came out pretty good for me :) The only problem was I think 30 minutes may have been a bit to long for me, they were quite browned and just very, very faintly smokey or burnt tasting

    ReplyDelete
  49. Rush_o Did you mix the oil with the pretzel very well? This is a little bit of an odd step because it's hard to make sure the pretzels get covered.

    ReplyDelete
  50. B.Weingart - Bravo! Maybe the smokey flavor was a nice addition? Either way, maybe 30 minutes at 300 degrees is too long for some ovens (depending on altitude)...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Have you tried to do them in a crock pot? Do you think it will work?

    ReplyDelete
  52. TL - I have not tried them in a crock pot but I don't think that will work. The cinnamon & sugar etc need to be backed on, not just heated up.

  53. So a couple of Christmas's ago, my husband and I were so broke and couldn't get gifts for anyone, so instead we made toffee and your cinnamon pretzel recipe, and brought it to all our friends. Every body loved it. Thanks for sharing it :)

  54. I made these a few weeks back and will be making them again for my daughter's birthday. They are sooooo good! I used coconut oil (instead of veggie oil) and could nearly NOT stop eating them! Mmm! Thank you for the sweet/salty snack!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I just found this on Pinterest & can't wait to make them. I'm thinking of adding some chai drink mix in with the cinnamon & sugar. Another Fall option would be some Pumpkin Pie spice. Yum!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Can you use the broken Wege pretzels instead of the ones shown here?

    ReplyDelete
  57. When I was pouring on the mixture I thought, "OMG, these are going to be so sweet.". But I just took them from the oven and tasted it right away, and they are AWESOME! Somehow the salt takes care of everything. I hope I can find the strength to stop eating these before I take them with me for Christmas Eve with my family. Simple, quick, inexpensive, delicious, different and a great looking party snack... The house smells great too. Thanks for sharing. They will be a go to for last minute invites or when company drops by. I have a feeling I'll be making them often.. Something to keep popcorn company on movie nights
